Polish Lowland Sheepdog, also known as PON, is a Polish sheepdog breed. In the past, they were used for herding sheep and for guarding. Currently, it works great in dog sports that require agility, energy and speed (like agility); thanks to its excellent sense of smell, it can also be successful in sniffing competitions, such as Nose Work.
Due to innate distrust, PON requires systematic socialization, contact with different people, places, means of transport. When it comes to sensitivity to sounds (such as thunderstorms or fireworks), our PONs (bought in various kennels) never showed fear or excessive sensitivity to gunshots, and they were not taught by us in this direction.
The PON is a muscular medium-sized dog; for adult bitches: 42-47 cm, and for adult dogs: 45-50 cm tall.
Although the standard does not specify the weight, PON weighs between 18 and even 30 kilograms.
A characteristic feature of the breed is a naturally short or rudimentary tail, although some puppies are born with a long tail.
The PON has a rich coat of various colors (white and black, black and white, white with markings, gray, gray and white, brown, fawn, etc.). The PON's hair, commonly known as hair, grows all the time and is not replaced for winter or summer, as, for example, in the Tatra Sheepdog.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a very intelligent dog, eager to learn and requiring daily walks, where it can freely sniff. When it comes to distances, it can walk several or even several kilometers at its own pace; it is definitely not suitable as a marathon companion or intense cycling. Activities should be selected based on reason and taking into account the age of the dog and its individual predispositions.
They are usually gentle to other animals and distrustful of strangers. PONs are very vigilant guardians.
